Description of Program
The Mount Saint Charles Academy’s Dance Department offers students a creative outlet to explore various forms of choreography and endless opportunities to tune-in to their own artistic ability. Through this department, students participate in workouts that improve their overall physique, develop an understanding about the body systems at work when dancing, and boost their confidence through performance individually and as a group, whether they take the stage during rehearsals or at a showcase at Mount, or put on a show on the court at Providence College basketball games as members of Mount’s Universal Dance Association (UDA) Competition Team.
- Mount’s Universal Dance Association Dance Competition Team travels for performances and aims to compete in the National Dance Team Championship
- Dance team students have performed at collegiate sporting events, such as Providence College Basketball games
“The dance program has developed a competitive dance team that competes regionally and nationally at the high school level. With intense focus around synchronization and mastery of dance movement, Team Elite has created a reputation as a college preparatory dance team. Team Elite consists of students in grades 9 through 12, and membership is determined year-to-year through an audition. Many former members have continued their dance education on Division I and Division II nationally-ranked college dance teams. In years to come, Team Elite will strive to expand the program to include both a varsity and junior varsity team while continuing to be a strong contender at the regional and national level.” – Catherine Ryan, teacher
“I am very fortunate to be a part of the only high school in Rhode Island with a dance team that competes on a varsity level. Mount Saint Charles also offers dance as a class elective with a curriculum that works well with both experienced and non-experienced dancers. I hope students can recognize the scarcity of strong dance programs found in schools, and that they take the opportunity to explore all the great things the dance program has to offer! – Caroline Corrigan, Class of 2020
