Extension Programs

Postgraduate Program

The postgraduate program is for students who have already earned a high school diploma, and are choosing to remain at Mount for an extra year to enhance their college profile to fill in gaps on their transcript or to take more advanced courses. Taking more Advanced Placement courses and exams allows students to potentially earn additional college credit. The Mount post-graduate is required to take the full year post graduate seminar course, along with at least three other academic courses. A part-time schedule is allowed. This “extra” year allows a student to mature socially and provides another year of academic preparedness and time to enhance study skills, time management, and perhaps another year to strengthen athletic ability to pursue a sport in college.

*Currently, Mount postgraduate students are not allowed by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League to participate in athletics for a fifth year.

5-Year High School Program

The five-year program is for students who want to extend required graduation requirements over a five-year timeline to maximize time for academic and emotional supports and self-directed learning time. Students with learning differences or in need of social-emotional support sometimes need more time to meet Mount’s rigorous academic standards. Mount’s mission is to support students’ academic and personal growth, and this mission should not be limited by a traditionally-imposed four-year timeline for graduation from high school.

Middle School Extension Program

This “extra” year middle school option is similar in philosophy to the postgraduate and five-year program, as it allows a student more time to mature socially, provides another year of academic preparedness and time to enhance study skills and time management, and perhaps another year to strengthen athletic ability to pursue a sport in high school. This program allows students to maintain eligibility for four years of participation in high school athletics (unless the student turns 19 prior to Sept. 1 of their senior year).
