Brothers of the Sacred Heart

A Brief History

In 1821, during the aftermath of the French Revolution, a young diocesan priest, Father Andre Coindre, founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Lyon France. The Preamble to the Brothers’ Rule of Life states, “to rescue young people from ignorance, to prepare them for life, and to give them knowledge and love of religion.” This was Father Coindre’s mission, and though he did not live long enough to see the order thrive after its difficult first years, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart today remain true to the mission.
The Brothers’ first venture into North America was in Mobile, Alabama in 1847. Brother Polycarp responded to the invitation of Bishop Michael Portier and sent five brothers to the United States and the order began its transformation from a French congregation to a worldwide institute.  Between 1847 and 1900, a total of 163 missionary brothers came from France to the U.S and Canada. In 1889, the first of the brothers came to New England to staff a school in Manchester, New Hampshire and came to Woonsocket, Rhode Island in 1893 at the request of Msgr. Charles Dauray to staff the parish school at Precious Blood parish. In 1924, at age 83, Msgr. Dauray saw his dream of a secondary school come true with the establishment of Mount Saint Charles Academy, staffed by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart with Brother Josephus as the school’s first principal.
Today, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart are serving in over thirty countries in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.  The following schools are affiliated with the Brothers of the Sacred Heart provinces in North America:

The Educational Charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart

The charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart is a gift from God to the Church. Our predecessors made us heirs of this charism through their devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As members of a school community striving to embody this charism, our primary mission is the evangelization of young people. Fundamental to our educational charism is the response of Andre Coindre to poor, neglected, and dechristianized youth.
Today we draw our inspiration from a spirituality of love expressed in the Gospel and lived through the compassion of Christ. This spirituality informs, shapes, and directs the educational ministry of the school community. Through our commitment as professional educators in the faith, we nurture and model love and compassion in Christian community.
Each and every student is known, valued, treasured, and taught in partnership with the family. Hospitality, availability, personal interest, and concern for others are hallmarks of this charism. We emphasize the formation of the whole person, traditional values, high expectations, self-discipline, fairness, professional competence, and collaboration. The respect, kindness, and concern, which flow from the charism, are signs within the school of the compassion of Christ.

Community Song

When we are filled with love, a love among brothers

how good and how comforting it is to live together in unity
How good and how comforting it is when, in the midst of our cares,
we have but a single heart to praise the one Lord, our God.
To be one in love, could anyone ask for more?
May the human spirit taste this peace and fill contentment!
The world has nothing comparable to offer.
Let us always keep alive the spirit of unity we now share.
Let us always keep alive the spirit of unity we now share.
In the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, we are a private, Catholic, college preparatory, 6th -12th grade academy committed to academic excellence, moral values, and well-rounded students. Our commitment to caring means that each and every student is known, valued, and treasured.
