Mount Saint Charles to Join New Athletic League
School will play in New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) leagues in 2024-2025
Mount Saint Charles Academy announced on November 21, 2023, it will join the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC), effective at the start of the 2024-2025 academic year. The NEPSAC is an association of accredited independent and faith-based schools across New England. Membership will provide opportunities for grades 6 through 12 as well as post-graduate competition. Mount’s post graduate program started in the Fall of 2019.
“I am excited to see what the future holds for Mount as a member of NEPSAC,” said Alan Tenreiro, Mount’s president. “Competing in the league will give us more flexibility for scheduling and the opportunity to field more teams. Mount has always been a college prep school, and our participation in a league with other prep schools will mean more opportunities for our Mounties.”
Tenreiro added that Mount has a long history of athletic achievement which serves as an important pillar of the school’s after school programming. “Through our athletics programs we teach invaluable lessons about morals, the worth of working in unison, and the importance of each person. On the field, court, or ice, as in the classroom and in life, our athletes know that hard work pays off in countless ways.” Competing in the new league will also increase visibility in the college athletics recruitment process.
In its one hundredth year of educating students, Mount has seen increased enrollment in recent years. With Mount’s location in northern Rhode Island and close to southeastern Massachusetts, there are multiple NEPSAC leagues in which to compete with teams of comparable skill and ability. The 2024-2025 season will help determine what leagues are the best fit for Mount’s athletic teams – including the new wrestling program – while allowing teams to compete for a New England championship. Middle school sports will continue in their current leagues with additional games against NEPSAC opponents.
Tenreiro continued, “While our opponents might change, Mount’s mission is constant. We remain focused on academic excellence and nurturing a caring faith-based school culture with quality educators and innovative programs at its core. Whether it be performing arts, the math team, chess club, service opportunities, Student Leadership Association, or athletics, our students have the chance to grow their potential through extracurricular activities. Mount’s strong reputation for academic achievement, holistic education, combined with the strong reputation of the NEPSAC will continue to add to Mount’s track record of success.”
As Mount begins membership with the NEPSAC in 2024-2025, it will conclude its membership in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League with gratitude for the countless experiences over the years. Tenreiro, a member of Mount’s Class of 1992 who played soccer and tennis for Mount, added, “We are extremely thankful to all the member schools of the RIIL we have competed against over the years, especially our fellow Catholic schools. Our athletic department’s solid foundation is linked to the history we’ve shared with the RIIL.”
Director of Athletics Ray Leveille, a 2000 graduate of Mount, said, “We’re grateful to NEPSAC’s leadership and all its member schools for welcoming us to this exceptional association. We look forward to advancing our school motto of excellence, developing new rivalries while remaining focused on honorable competition, and providing the best possible experience for our student athletes.”
