The faculty has been hard at work developing the curriculum for the new 6th
grade. In addition to the five core subjects (Religious Studies, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), the 6th
graders will be enrolled in Wellness (Health/PE), have a choice of one elective (Art, Band, Introduction to French/Spanish), and participate in quarterly exploratory electives. These quarterly electives, part of both the 6th
grade programs, offer the opportunity for students to explore areas of interest and possible further study. Many of the topics originate in the fine arts (drama, chorus, drums, dance), others are more technically oriented (lego/robotics, web design), and some are for the more athletic (learn & burn, indoor activity trail, workout warriors, no “I” in team).
As academic departments planned for the 6th grade, the rest of the junior high curriculum was also evaluated. Some departments were able to tweak their courses, while other departments totally overhauled the class offerings. A couple of departments are implementing changes across the board beginning this school year; most are phasing in changes or new courses.
The goal of the junior high stays true to the mission of the school and of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Religious studies classes, service opportunities and community celebrations foster faith development. The academic program is rigorous and will prepare students for the college preparatory program at the high school level. And, we look to educate the whole child by offering programs and opportunities beyond academics through athletics and extra-curricular activities.
